NO QUIET NIGHTS / BUYER GUIDE

Google Ads vs Meta Ads for pubs: where should you spend first?

One captures people already looking. The other can give nearby people a reason to leave the sofa.

The short answer

Use Google when intent already exists. Use Meta when the job is to create or remind demand.

If someone is searching for a private function room, pub showing football or Sunday lunch, Google can capture that intent. If Tuesday is quiet and nobody is actively searching for your specific reason to visit, Meta can put that reason in front of a relevant local audience. Start with the trading job, not the platform.

When Google Ads makes more sense

Google is strongest when the customer already knows what they want. Searches around function rooms, party venues, pubs showing a match, food or a specific local occasion can carry meaningful intent.

The landing page matters. Paying for a high-intent click and sending it to a generic homepage can waste the advantage.

When Meta Ads makes more sense

People do not necessarily search “give me a reason to go to this pub on Wednesday”. Meta can interrupt the feed with a concrete reason: quiz night, live music, a food occasion, a new menu, an event or a session-specific proposition.

People do not leave the sofa for content. They leave for a reason.

What if your budget is small?

Do not automatically split it 50/50. Concentrating budget behind the clearer commercial hypothesis often produces a cleaner test. If private hire is the priority and search demand exists, start there. If an underused event needs local awareness, Meta may deserve the first test.

How should a pub measure paid advertising?

  • qualified private-hire enquiries
  • bookings or reservations
  • event ticket or registration actions
  • tracked calls where appropriate
  • revenue attributable to a campaign where the data allows it
  • cost per commercially meaningful action

Clicks, impressions and video views can diagnose a campaign. They are not the final commercial result.

The commercial test

What behaviour are we paying to change?

Define the session, booking, event or enquiry first. Then choose the channel most likely to influence it.

Should you hire an agency to run pub ads?

Management becomes more valuable when targeting, creative, landing pages, tracking and ongoing optimisation all need attention. If you already have those capabilities internally, paying an agency merely to press publish may add little value.

The NO QUIET NIGHTS take

Make tonight specific.

A channel cannot rescue a vague reason to visit. Before buying media, make the occasion clear enough that a customer can understand why now.

Frequently asked questions

Are Google Ads good for pubs?

They can be when customers actively search for something the pub sells, especially private hire, food, events or local venue intent. They are less useful when there is little relevant search demand.

Are Facebook and Instagram ads good for pubs?

Meta Ads can be useful for creating local awareness and giving nearby audiences a timely reason to visit, especially for events, offers and specific sessions.

Should a pub run Google and Meta Ads together?

Sometimes. Search can capture existing intent while Meta creates or reminds demand. A smaller venue should not split budget automatically if one channel clearly matches the immediate job better.

How much should a pub spend on ads?

Start with enough budget to test one commercially meaningful objective. Media spend should be separate from management fees and judged against the value of the resulting trade.
